Adult ADHD Therapy

Marisol Achirica is an English-speaking psychotherapist in Mérida, Yucatán, with 25+ years of experience and 70 five-star Google reviews. She provides therapy and support for adults living with ADHD, both in person in Mérida and online via Zoom.

Many adults discover their ADHD late, after years of feeling they were underachieving or “not trying hard enough.” The truth is usually different. Therapy helps you understand how your mind actually works and build systems that fit it, instead of fighting yourself to use ones that never did.

How Adult ADHD Can Show Up

Everyone experiences it differently. These are some of the common ways it shows up:

How We Work With ADHD

Therapy helps adults with ADHD build practical strategies, steadier emotional regulation, and real self-compassion. We also work on what tends to travel with ADHD: the anxiety, the low self-esteem, the burnout from years of pushing twice as hard for the same result. My approach blends a humanistic and psychodynamic perspective with concrete, day-to-day tools.

I work especially well with sensitive, intelligent people who have spent years feeling out of step with how things are supposed to work. For English-speaking adults and expats building a life in Mérida, I also understand the extra weight of doing that in a second language and a new culture.

Frequently asked questions about adult ADHD

Yes. Therapy won’t change how your brain is wired, and it changes how you live with it. We build practical strategies for focus, time, and organization, and we work on the emotional side: the frustration, the low self-esteem, the burnout that builds up over years. Many people feel more in control within the first few weeks.
No. A formal ADHD diagnosis is made by a physician or psychiatrist, not by me. If you suspect you have ADHD and want an assessment, I can point you toward a specialist who does that work. What I offer is therapeutic support for living with ADHD day to day: strategies, emotional regulation, and help with the anxiety or self-doubt that often comes alongside it.
Therapy and medication do different jobs, and many adults use both. Medication is prescribed and managed by a physician or psychiatrist, never by me. Therapy gives you the skills, structure, and self-understanding that medication alone doesn’t teach. Some people work with therapy only. Others combine it with medication their doctor prescribes. You decide what fits, with the right specialists involved.
It depends on you and what you want to change. Many adults feel more organized and less overwhelmed within the first weeks, once they have concrete tools that fit how their mind works. Deeper shifts in self-esteem and long-held patterns usually take a few months of steady work.
Yes. I work in both English and Spanish, with in-person sessions in Mérida, Yucatán, and online sessions via Zoom anywhere in the world. For English-speaking adults and expats in Mérida who want an English-speaking psychotherapist, ADHD support works with the same depth online as it does in person.
